A Brief History
A Brief History of Dunsborough and Surrounds
The Dunsborough and Yallingup region has undergone significant transformation since 1984, evolving from a tightly planned and legislatively controlled area to the thriving community we see today. Early efforts by pioneers like Colin Lofts, who spearheaded the Dunsborough Golf Course development, were instrumental in shaping the town’s growth.
In 1989, the Dunsborough Structure Plan set aside 25 hectares for recreation, paving the way for landmarks like the Dunsborough Playing Fields and the Naturaliste Community Centre (NCC). Visionary locals such as Emmie Blackhurst, Claire Guinness, Joy Smith, and John Edwards championed community initiatives, with the NCC officially opening in 2003 after nearly two decades of planning and fundraising. Today, rooms and spaces in the NCC are named in their honour, celebrating their tireless contributions.
The Chamber of Commerce
The Dunsborough Chamber of Commerce, established in 1978, played a critical role in the region’s development. Founding members John Edwards and Claire Guinness envisioned a unified business community that would advocate for local interests and foster economic growth. By 1994, the Chamber had 30–40 members and outlined key objectives:
- Supporting local businesses and attracting visitors.
- Advocating for community interests with government bodies.
- Promoting tourism and permanent residency.
- Providing education, training, and networking opportunities.
The Chamber’s achievements include securing 7-day trading, establishing a permanent police station, facilitating the Tourist Centre’s move to a shopfront, and lobbying for better water infrastructure and communication services.
Community Milestones
Significant events and contributions have shaped Dunsborough into the thriving community it is today,
with a strong sense of identity and pride.
The Naturaliste Triangle Funfest (1989–1990)
This iconic event celebrated the vibrant culture of the region, offering a mix of activities that brought the community together and showcased local attractions. Highlights included golf tournaments, art exhibitions, wine tastings, live music, kite flying, archery, and vintage car expos. Visitors and locals alike enjoyed unique experiences, from exploring nearby caves and museums to attending the elegant Triangle Ball, which featured the renowned band, the Troupadores.
The Easter Fair
Originally organised by the Naturaliste Community Centre (NCC), this beloved annual event became a cornerstone of Dunsborough’s cultural calendar. Featuring family-friendly activities, market stalls, and entertainment, it brought residents together in celebration. Now hosted by the Naturaliste Sports Club, the Easter Fair continues to be a highlight of the year, drawing crowds from near and far.
Advocacy for Key Infrastructure
The Dunsborough community, with strong leadership from the Chamber of Commerce and local pioneers, played a pivotal role in advocating for essential infrastructure. Projects such as the Naturaliste Community Centre, the Dunsborough Playing Fields, and local government offices were the result of years of planning, fundraising, and determination. These facilities have become vital spaces for recreation, events, and community services, contributing significantly to the quality of life in the area.
Through these milestones and the unwavering efforts of its community leaders and the Chamber of Commerce, Dunsborough has flourished into a vibrant hub that balances growth and progress with its unique charm and sense of place. These contributions have left an enduring legacy, ensuring that Dunsborough remains not only a desirable destination but also a welcoming place to call home.
