The CCIWA’s position on this issue: you cannot deregulate trading hours without balancing out the ledger with making penalty rates more reasonable. Penalty rates have a direct negative impact particularly on tourism destinations with a high number of hospitality and retail traders. We know that many of you have contributed information and submissions to the Fair Work Commission (FWC) in support of applications to reduce Sunday and Public Holiday penalty rates for employers within the retail and hospitality industry. Do you know of businesses that have chosen to close because of current penalty rates?
